Film Review: Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum

FilmReviewGonjiamHauntedAsylumIf you like horror films — actual edge-of-your-pants, “Is this real or isn’t it”, honest-to-goodness horror films — and don’t mind chasing subtitles, you need to check out this film.

It’s super creepy without resorting to cheap scare tactics or music, LOVED it. I always hated the recent mainstream Hollywood scary films with either really shitty camera work that was more torture via motion sickness and a flat story than actual horror (a la The Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity) or cheap jump scares that cheat by relying heavily on the startle reflex rather than actual scare (a la Insidious, The Conjuring and that entire weak-ass family, The Woman In Black).

This review does not contain spoilers.

This one creeps on you. You wait for the jump scare that never comes. You’re tensed and holding your breath, waiting for the kill that does come… after being so high-strung you wish you were already dead. And doesn’t bring motion sickness or shitty quality video despite being ‘found footage’. I struggled to follow the story a bit because the subtitles flew by a bit quick, especially the ‘online comments’ (that was frankly ridiculous), but aside from knowing the vague backstory to the setting, their individual conversations contribute almost nothing to the plot.

Whether that’s a pro or con is up to you, but I find the atmosphere more than made up for it. I legit almost pooped my pants. Highly recommended.

And I also had nightmares for several days afterwards. The close-up face. You’ll know when you see it.

Verdict: 5 stars. Need new pants.
